The Public Utilities Authority has granted a license to the Golan Heights project.
Sources inform ''Globes'' that the Public Utilities Authority (Electricity) has granted a conditional license to Mei Golan Wind Energy Development (1988) Ltd. to build a $500 million 400-megawatt wind farm spread over 140 kilometers on the Golan Heights' north-south axis. AES Corporation (NYSE: AES) may become a strategic partner in the project.
The Public Utilities Authority sent the license to Minister of National Infrastructures Benjamin Ben-Eliezer, who is expected to approve it. Once signed, Mei Golan can submit the building plan to the National Infrastructures Council.
Mei Golan built Israel's first wind farm in 1992 at Tel Aseniya in the northern Golan. The wind farm has ten turbines, which generate six megawatts. 80% of its output goes to a number of local factories and the rest is sold to the national grid
