President Peres proclaimed in Copenhagen a vision to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 20%.
"A renewable energy committee should be set up tomorrow, headed by the prime minister. This is more important than reform of the Israel Land Administration (ILA)," Minister of Environmental Protection Gilad Erdan said at the "Forbes Israel" green economy conference today.
Erdan added, "The prime minister will have to decide between the conflicting interests of agriculture, the environment, defense infrastructures, and so forth."
Erdan said, "I am pleased to say that I have agreed with Ministry of Finance director general Haim Shani, and even discussed with him last night, for him to head a working team to implement President Peres' proclamation at Copenhagen that Israel will seek to cut the country's greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2020. The working team will comprise director generals within days, and get going within weeks. Led by the Ministry of Finance and the prime minister, we'll stop talking too much and bring about an Israeli economy that will be much more environmentally sustainable."
