Cyprus fears environmental impact of gas drilling

Cypriot Commerce Minister Antonis Paschalides told the "Cyprus Mail", "We are one of the few countries to carry out a strategic and environmental study before beginning the exploration for gas."

Cyprus Commerce Minister Antonis Paschalides has told the "Cyprus Mail" that he is concerned about the environmental impact of drilling for gas in water off Cyprus and Israel. As a result he said that Cyprus has taken many precautionary measures in the drilling off its shores that Noble Energy Inc. (NYSE: NBL). He said, " “The first thing I discussed with Noble when they came was the environment.”

The "Cyprus Mail" reported that Cypriot concerns come against the backdrop of the problems in drilling the Leviathan well, which adjoins the Cypriot field to the east.

Paschalides said, "We are one of the few countries to carry out a strategic and environmental study before beginning the exploration for gas. Our agreement with the company is all about the protection of the environment. We’ve set very strict conditions. Measures will be taken to protect the environment.”
