An Israeli experimental device for the generation of electricity from hot air is under construction at Renewable Energy Center at Rotem Industries Ltd., the technology transfer company of the Negev Nuclear Research Center at Dimona. The thermosolar device built by Heliofocus Ltd. was jointly developed with the Weizmann Institute of Science.
The 35-meter high experimental device is located in a 5,000-square meter site. It will generate electricity by heating air, instead of current water or oil-based devices. The device comprises a receiver located in the focal of a 30-meter parabolic dish that reflects sun rays onto it. The receiver converts the sun rays into hot air. The system uses less land than current thermosolar systems.
Rotem Industries is offering Heliofocus advance infrastructures for carrying out tests and experiments for the device, including performance measurement, technology verification, demonstrations, and collection tests. The device will be part of the Renewable Energy Center's operations, joining other experimental devices in operation or planned. These include thermosolar systems developed by BrightSource Energy Inc., photovoltaic systems, and seaweed biofuel projectg.
