A survey found that Lapid, who has resigned his position at Channel 2, could win up to 20 Knesset seats.
Yair Lapid has announced his departure from Channel 2 and entry into politics. He is seen by many as the great hope of Israeli politics.
A survey held in late December found that, if elections were held then, he would win 15 Knesset seats. A different survey conducted by a target=new href=http://www.geocartography.com/eng/>Geocartography Knowledge a few days ago found that he could win 20 Knesset seats. The survey found that the entry of Lapid - the son of the late Tomy Lapid, who chaired the Shinui party and served as justice minister - and the reentry of Shas co-founder Arieh Deri could become the refuge de jour of the 25%-plus of the perennially disappointed electorate that is disillusioned by the current leaders and political parties.
The Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee, chaired by MK David Rotem (Israel Beiteinu) will probably approve a bill to require an 18-month cooling off period for journalists seeking to enter politics (aka "the Lapid Law").
Yair Lapid is following the path taken by former Channel 2 correspondent Shelly Yacimovich, now the chairwoman of the Labor Party.
