March CPI rises 0.4% in line with expectations

The annual inflation rate is now running at 3.2%, above the government target range.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 0.4% in March reaching 104.4 points, the Central Bureau of Statistics reported this evening. This is in line with expectations with most analysts predicting a 0.3-0.4% rise.

Fuel prices rose 3.6% last month, transport prices rose 1.3%, furniture and household equipment prices rose 0.4% and culture and entertainment prices rose 0.3%. On the other hand footwear prices fell by 1.2% and fresh fruit and vegetable prices fell by 1%.

The annual rate of inflation is now running at 3.2% above the government's target range of 1-3%. This is the first significant rise in the CPI after the index remained unchanged for the past three consecutive months and the highest rise since August 2011. The CPI is expected to rise by 1% this month due to fuel price rises.
