Israeli taxi ordering app company GetTaxi today launched an Android app for smartwatches running the Android Wear operating system, which will make it possible for the company’s customers to order taxis using only voice commands, without needing to operate the smartphone app.
The app is available in the markets in which GetTaxi currently operates: Israel, London, New York, Moscow, and Saint Petersburg. However, the number of smartphones in the market today is relatively small, and it seems GetTaxi is a bit ahead of its time. Moreover, the world of smartwatches is divided into a number of different operating systems - Apple, for example, has its own operating system, and even Samsung’s smartwatches do not currently support Android, and instead run an internal operating system created by the Korean company Tizen.
GetTaxi VP Global Marketing Rich Pleeth, who is currently in Israel, said, “Our goal is to provide a high-quality experience to our users, who are already accustomed to ordering taxis from their smartphones. All you have to do is say, ‘OK, Google, call me a car,” and a taxi will come.” Pleeth also said that “In an industry developing as quickly as the ‘On Demand’ industry, users demand quick, comfortable service. The current version, for Android, signifies a big step for us into the wearables market.”
