The Begin Expressway now links the north of the city to the south and the Gush Etzion tunnels highway.
The southern section of Jerusalem's Begin Expressway (Road 50) linking Gilo with the Gush Etzion tunnels highway (Road 60) was opened this morning by the city's mayor Nir Barkat and Minister of Transport Yisrael Katz.
Drivers can now cross the city from north to south in just 12 minutes in normal traffic conditions. The Begin Expressway begins at the northern entrance to the city as a continuation of Road 443 in Ramot and runs 16 kilometers south beneath the western entrance to the city on Road 1 and via Malkah to Gilo. There are ten bridges and two tunnels but no traffic lights.
The section opened today includes a 180 meter tunnel beneath Beit Safafa. While the junction linking the Begin Expressway to the Tunnels Highway currently has traffic lights, an interchange will be built in the future.
